The Crown Hotel, Fakenham

Remember when this was a thriving pub? Remember when it was a positive focal point in the town centre?

The Crown has been closed for a long time now. It’s arguably the best recognised building in the Market Square and it’s got to be the prime location for a pub in Fakenham, yet it remains empty. The Crown continues to project an appallingly negative image on a town whose residents and representatives are fighting to improve and promote it. For an important building like this to remain closed just looks bad and if it could be reopened might start to paint a more positive picture of the town. Maybe that would in turn start to attract more and better shops – nothing breeds success like success, as they say.

What can be done?

I was talking  the other day to a Wells resident about a similar situation in his town. There’s a prominent building – now an eyesore – on the Quay which has been empty for a long time due to a fire. The community there have called on the council to investigate issuing a compulsory purchase order. It makes sense. They’ve spent shedloads of money in the area and want to promote Wells, as we want to for Fakenham, but the eyesore is a blot on the landscape which is holding them back. ‘Spoiling the ship for a ha’porth of tar’ is the old saying.

I wonder if something like that’s a possibility for The Crown? The owners don’t seem to be doing anything to actively sell the place or get new tenants in. I have a client who tells me he produced an outline business plan for joint ownership of the place as a pub/restaurant/hotel but despite contacting the owners with it he was completely ignored.

I attended a Kick Start Fakenham meeting last night – the first one I’ve been to for ages. The meetings are much more formal than they used to be, with a definite agenda and structure to them. Although the informal nature of earlier meetings was friendly and comfortable, I think it has improved with this change – they covered a lot of issues in an hour and a half!

There’s a fair bit going on at Kick Start. Carnival plans, fundraising ideas, festivals, commemorative areas being planned for the community and a lot more besides. They’re actively representing themselves on other town agencies too – the Area Partnership, Town Council and Chamber of Trade will all have Kick Start representatives from now on. It’s all coming together nicely.

Hopefully, I’ll be helping them to get a website up and running soon – they’ll then be branching out from their Facebook page so that information about what they’re doing for the town is more widely available. That’s why I was there last night.

Online information: That’s another area which will hopefully become more ‘joined up’ in Fakenham in the near future too. Watch this space!

The Chamber of Trade’s Bonfire Night Colouring Competition attracted around 1200 entries from various local schools. When judging was over, they had the great idea of brightening up one of the town’s empty shops by plastering them inside the windows.

I think they look brilliant!

If you haven’t been to Fakenham Surgery recently, you may not have seen their leaflet explaining what their proposed new building in Clipbush Lane will look like. Here’s an artist’s impression…

You see, I used to like it, back when Christopher Eccleston reintroduced the character with Billie Piper as his sidekick. It was a bit edgy, fresh and intriguing, with clever twisting plot patterns being woven in the background.

Since then, it has decended into a typical ‘BBC-fest’ of  special guest stars & self-congratulation and has become a back-patting excercise for the Beeb and the writers and producers who are involved. The first series’ success became the actual focus, much to the detriment of the subsequent programme content.

When I went to see Miss Jenkins in an outdoor concert a couple of years back (see – I don’t just like rock music), she seemed to concentrate on her name-dropping and dress-changing rather than the actual content of her repertoire. It was all a big PR excercise rather than for the sake of the music. Style over content. No wonder she’s been signed up for this…

Oh, and did I mention the music in Doctor Who is still way too loud?

Fakenham’s a small town. You’d think it would be easy to let everybody know when you had some news to tell. Unfortunately, I haven’t found that to be true over the years. We all seem to be involved with friends and colleagues in small groups and news doesn’t always escape into the outside world efficiently.

Newspapers like The EDP, Fakenham Times and The Fakenham Sun play their part. In fact they do a really great job in keeping us all informed. Trouble is, they can only ever print a limited snapshot of what’s going on at any one time and they don’t all pick up on the same information.  Also, there are lots of different people you need to contact when you have something happening and need to tell the world - and if your news is business related you may not be able to reach your target audience easily.

When Kick Start Fakenham held its first tentative meeting over a year ago, I mentioned the fact that there was no central point of information distribution. No single place you could go to make sure that your news reached the right people. At the time, it looked like Kick Start might provide that central point, but their website is still to be published and if the truth’s known, they’re probably finding the same old problems themselves when they need to get their info published.

So, I’ve come up with something myself. It will be launching soon
